How to choose your colours for your wedding

Wedding planning choose palette

How to choose your colours for your wedding

You have decided that you wish to just use a colour to base your wedding design around and here we talk about how to choose your colours for your wedding and build a colour palette.

Let’s have a little look into colour psychology, which works at a subconscious level and creates a gut response. I’ve split these into four seasons.

Seasons of Colour

Use Nature as a Guide

I always believe that looking at nature really gives a good idea if your scheme will work as you never look at it and think ‘oh those colours are all wrong!’

When you look at the picture are you drawn to any of them? I think I am a cross between spring and summer, I am most definitely not winter and as such I don’t think I would ever be drawn to those colours.

The seasons represent lots of keywords, I have picked five:

SPRING: Bright, bubbly, creative, sparkly, fun

SUMMER: Calm, beautiful, graceful, gentle, soft

AUTUMN: Comforting, hearty, friendly, nostalgic, warm

WINTER: Disciplined, expensive, focused, opulent, serious

Do let me know what your colours are and if you think it matched a season and represented you both!

A natural approach

I am reasonably confident that this isn’t a way a couple would choose their colours! So, lets crack on with that….

Firstly, decide on a colour that represents you BOTH, we all know I love pink, but I feel if we chose that colour the day would be more about ‘me’ than ‘us’.

In this example we are choosing the colour ‘Emerald Green’ (when talking colours I really love to name them….. Dove Grey, burnt orange, eggshell blue …!)

There are several rules that you can follow to ensure a successful colour match.

A technical approach

1: MONOCHROMATICS

The use of one colour family in various values or intensities. This can be very effective for a subtle look.

2: ANALOGOUS

These are neighbouring colours on the colour wheel and these work as they share the same undertones, for example, ‘Blue, Blue Green and Green’. These colours are harmonious but not altogether what we are looking for as you want impact. So, add in another neighbouring colour (such as blue purple) and you have a more eye-catching palette.

3: COMPLEMENTARY

These are colours that are opposite on the wheel, one hue is cool, the other warm – think yellow and purple, orange and blue.

I believe that using a few of these rules together can bring together a palette. I am going to choose some other green tones, and then add in some other colours.

Luckily with choosing the colour green, it can pretty much match to any colour due to its association with nature and flowers. I am choosing a vintage rose blush (Emerald cool, blush warm) and as an accent a shimmering gold.

How to use Pinterest to plan my wedding

Pinterest wedding planning

How to use Pinterest to plan my wedding

Pinterest is a widely used tool for wedding planning, but how do you use Pinterest to plan your wedding without getting overwhelmed?

Firstly, a word of warning. A lot of pictures on Instagram could well be way out of budget. There is no point in saving images of florals that cost £25,000 when you have a £500 budget.

Lets begin by building our Pinterest boards, only once you have established a starting point for your look, read about that HERE.

I absolutely LOVE Pinterest, but when I design weddings and shoots, I don’t like to imitate, so I build boards based around textiles, textures and overall feel. For example, my snow-white board incorporated a rich red velvet, a shiny apple, and pictures of the sun beams in a glade in the woodland. This way the suppliers were able to get creative and to bring to life something original.

Step one

Step one: Create an overall ‘Wedding Board’ go through and Pin things that take your fancy, no need to be frugal here as we will curate a bit later. Be sure to think about how you want the wedding to ‘feel’ so don’t just use wedding pics, you can find materials you like, interior design, think outside of just weddings.

Pinterest wedding

Step Two

Step two: Take your time, you do not need to do this all-in-one go, in fact, you will get a more rounded picture if you come back to it over a couple of weeks. Do not forget to involve your partner in this process!

Step 3: Now its time to review what you have saved, are there similar images? Which one do you like best? What you are aiming for now is a clarity in your vision. Narrow down to an overall look and feel of the wedding that you want.

Step Four

Step 4: Next, I would be inclined to set up individual boards for all of the details that you are planning for:

Tablescapes

Invitations

Dress

Flowers

Favours, etc

Really drill down into the subjects including colours, fonts, ribbons, placemats. Glassware etc etc

TOP TIP

TOP TIP: Did you know that you can create secret boards?? So if you are worried about friends and family seeing, just make it secret and share with just the relevant people.

When you set up your boards share them with me so I can help if you need.

How do I choose a style or theme for my wedding?

How to pick a style or theme

How do I choose a style or theme for my wedding? – where to start

So, you are wondering how to even begin to choose a style or theme for your wedding and if you even need to do this step. Is there a difference between a style and a theme? Are you thinking; I don’t want a theme, where do I go from here?

I am here to break it all down for you, so that you can crack on planning your wedding once all of this has been decided.

Our good friend and wedding planner, Illy from www.illyelizabethweddings.com, has given this insight into how she would initiate this thought process with her clients:

“I ask my clients to pick one thing; either an item or a colour and we then build up from there”

Style or Theme?

Ok, so lets first talk ‘style’. If you have already picked your venue, do keep this in mind at this point.

I shall list the various options of these below and this list is by no means exhaustive, but it might give you an idea of what it is that you like.

Bohemian (BOHO) – Relaxed and Carefree, think 70’s, flower power festivals.

Garden Party – Outside with lots of florals, afternoon tea

Festival – Hosting your own mini festival, lots of drinking and dancing, street food vendors

Formal – Black tie event with full sit-down meal

Romantic – Flowing materials and lots of candles and fairylights

Rustic – Haybales, hessian and mason jars

Rustic bunting

And now some themes, of course you may decide to combine the style with the theme……..for example modern Alice in Wonderland, vintage garden party.

Here are some ideas:

Swan lake

Tropical

Iridescent

Fairy-tale

Star wars

Dinosaurs

Colmans mustard

Theatre

The Greatest Showman

Final Tips

The list here is endless and I would start this with your partner so decide what it is you would like to incorporate into your day.

I would encourage you now to start building your Pinterest, please have a read of my blog post HERE to see how to do this without complete overwhelm.

At this point you may have decided on just a colour as your theme, you can read more about how to choose a colour palette HERE.

As a case study here, we are going to look at my fictitious couple, who are ex dancers, and their chosen item is a pair of ‘Ballet Shoes’

Inner Wellbeing and your Wedding

As we enter February, we are feeling the cold weather and wall to wall grey all around us, today, we are talking ‘Inner Wellbeing’, or ‘mindfulness’  It’s a word that you may have heard a lot and may wonder what it’s all about and how it relates to you and indeed wedding planning.

Mindfulness

Firstly, I use mindfulness every day to stay ‘present’ to be ‘mindful’ of everything around me helps to do this. A really great way is to get outside into nature, go for a walk, everyday – it doesn’t have to be a long one – but go the same way. On your walk, look for nature all around, what can you smell? What can you hear? Feel the leaves and the ground under your feet. At this time, you can’t be anything BUT present and, in the moment, so all of the stress and worry of the day will melt away.

If you walk the same way every day, you can notice the miracle of nature. I never knew until practicing this myself, that nature never stops. I always assumed that in the depths of winter ‘everything was dead’. This is so far from true!! The buds on the trees start as soon as the leaves fall off, there are flower buds and plants that begin to grow in winter.

To document this and to use as a tool, I took photos of an oak tree I passed through all the seasons. It’s a wonderful way to think that ‘this moment will pass’ if you are dealing with any stress or worry.

There can be more to it than that of course, as you can add in meditation and other practices but for now, it’s a great place to start.

Wellbeing  and Weddings

If you are keen to explore this further and look into how you can incorporate this into your wedding, here a few ideas.

  • Keep it Cosy – (handy in these times!) when you have a large wedding it is very difficult to engage and connect with all of your guests. From experience, there are not enough hours in the day to speak meaningfully to everyone and it will affect your own experience as well.
  • Less is More – this is about a marriage and not ‘stuff’ if you can’t afford it, there is no reason to go overboard on material things. Keep it simple and beautiful.
  • Preloved – In these days I believe the stigma has gone around using something that has been previously used – your dress for example. Imagine you wanted a party dress and you found one that has been worn ONCE in a charity shop – you would be over the moon! So why is it so different to look for a preloved wedding dress?
  • Regift -what can you regift from your wedding? Can you gift your flowers to your local care home? There are companies that can do this for you if you don’t know where to start.
  • Keep it lovely and local – where possible try and support your local independent businesses, they will so appreciate it!!

Meditation

Now this is something that I TRY to do, and I cannot profess I am much good, only that it does help to refocus and relax. I would advise to consult a practitioner in order to learn this art correctly. Failing this, I sit in crossed leg on my meditation pillow (all the gear and no idea springs to mind!)

If you would like to try, my advice is to set up a space for this, consider the following:

  • Something to sit on – being comfortable is really important, so whether you choose a meditation cushion, a large pod, a lounge pouffe, it will help keep you supported
  • Make it cosy – I tend to like to go outside for this practice, always make sure that you are cosy and warm. I take out gorgeous soft, fluffy blankets
  • Scent – I like to think this is a sensory practice, so I choose scented candles with aromatherapy oils to match my mood. Also candles help with the ambience and soothing light.
  • Nature – for me this is essential for my practise, if you can’t use an outside space, consider some indoor plants

Worry Time

Are you a worrier? I know I am! Here are some practical things that you can do to alleviate your worries.

  • Put aside ‘worry time’ – I know this sounds odd but it’s a great way to separate it and stop it from taking over.
  • Write it down – maybe use your ‘worry time’ to get it all down on paper. Also leave a note pad in easy reach so that you can write it down and put it to one side. Also leave one by your bed to alleviate any worries that may wake you and keep you up.
  • Put a positive spin on it; where possible, in your notebook, write an alternative, positive statement.

Affirmations

These are statements that you read aloud to encourage positive thinking and self-empowerment and I lOVE them! A great way to stay positive and focussed. I have some affirmations available soon in the shop. I hope this gives you a little guidance and I would love to hear your practises in the comments.

Micro Weddings

Micro weddings: I thought I should shed a little light on this buzz word that is around now, as I am hearing it more and more due to the COVID restrictions. I personally, COVID or not, think it’s a fantastic way to have your dream wedding but with smaller numbers and therefore a smaller budget.

Micro wedding

Micro Weddings

You may be confused with the different descriptions around the small weddings, so here is a little breakdown.

SMALL: 50-70 Guests

INTIMATE: 30-50 Guests

MICRO: 20 or less Guests, focussing on the guest experience, this is not about saving money.

ELOPEMENT: Just the two of you, and witnesses, often done in secret.

I am seeing a growing trend in the need and the want to have a wedding that focusses on the guests and the immersive wedding experience. With a micro wedding you can absolutely have all the cake, the speeches etc, but equally you can pick and choose the elements that you want to have.

The Pros of a Micro Weddings:

All aspects are less overwhelming, from the planning to the day itself. A much more relaxed experience

  • You will have the time to engage with all your guests, and cater to their individual needs effectively
  • Add details and thoughtful touches – so much easier with a small number
  • Don’t need to scrimp on the food budget as you are catering for less

Save money without compromising on your style, The rules are yours! A smaller amount attending means that you prioritise what is important and what you want to spend the budget on

Micro wedding

The Cons of Micro Wedding:

Well, the only one I can really think of is the obvious: you may not be able to invite everyone that you want to. Think very carefully about whether this is what you want as you may put certain peoples noses out of joint.

How do I start planning a Micro Wedding?

Start the planning with the Budget as you would with a full-scale wedding. Then make a list TOGETHER, of your priorities.

Now to look at  the all-important guest list, make a list of who you would love to have there and not the people you feel obliged to have there. At this point you will know if the idea of the Micro Wedding will work for you both.

Next is the particularly important venue, absolutely make sure its suitable to hold all the guests comfortably, and not too big that you are going to rattle around. There are a few venues in the UK that are perfect for a Micro Wedding – check out our Instagram to find out more!

Autumn Wedding Ideas UK

Autumn is a gorgeous time of year to get married and its still mild enough to be outside., so lets talk Autumn wedding ideas Uk! Those rich autumnal tones make a for a natural gorgeous back drop. Here’s my top tips to planning a country Autumn wedding.

DIY wedding autumn tips

8 Top Tips for Autumn Wedding Ideas UK

1: Embrace the season. Choose rich colours and use nature as your inspiration. I always say that nature is never wrong! You don’t ever look at the tones of the season and think ‘ewww, that clashes!’ Think rich dark chocolate browns, sage greens and burnt orange with an accent of copper. Or honey gold, bonfire orange and a rich deep burgundy. You can really bring the outdoors in with these tones.

2: Get Cosy! This is a perfect season to get the cosy included! For the venue, if you go for a Tipi you can have a fire pit inside. Looks awesome as well as warm. For outside think fires, and chimineas, mismatched sofas and snuggly blankets.

Details for An Autumn Wedding

3: Details. If you read the blog you will know I LOVE detail, it’s what makes ‘your’ wedding so you! Baskets of blankets, shawls and even hot water bottles, a hot chocolate station with cream, marshmallows and all sorts of dreamy toppings! Make it grown up by adding a good splash of Baileys. Have some marshmallows to toast and chestnuts to cook on the fire pit.

4: Hygge: The Danish word for Happiness….they are well known for their love of candles and Autumn Is perfect to really go to town as it gets dark early so they will be in full effect. Choose a mismatch of shapes and sizes and holders and group together for maximum impact. Don’t forget to think about lighting as well for guests to get to the carpark of the toilets.

Flowers and Centrepieces for an Autumn Wedding UK

5: Flowers and Centrepieces. Try to choose flowers that are in season to save some money, Dahlias are a popular choice for their wide colour spectrum and you could keep the Autumn theme running through the venue with conkers, woodland creatures, moss as the centrepieces with pops of colour in the candles.

7: The Golden hour. Make sure you and your photographer know when the sun will be setting to catch that gorgeous golden hour light. It’s about 45 minutes before and after sunset. Make time in the schedule for lots of gorgeous couple shots in the romantic light.

DIY wedding golden hour

8: Plan B. I am so passionate about this!! Think about your guests and if they have an area to shelter in case of rain, perhaps you can have some umbrellas on hand for guests. Your plan B should be as good as the Plan A and well thought out and prepared, this way you are emotionally ready as well as practically.  Be sure to think of the evening if you can’t be outside, what plans do you have instead?
